Self-Care Can be Anything

“News Flash: Self-Care Doesn’t Have to Mean Staying In”, a Vogue article by Daisy Jones, found me at just the right time.

Just from the title, I was already intrigued by what Jones was going to say because there is a phenomenon right now of twenty-something year olds having strict routines and bedtimes. I fall victim to wanting to be a part of this gaggle of girls, but I also enjoy going out… so where’s the in-between?

Jones describes self-care as many things. She expresses that self-care can be eating junk food in your bed after a night out and staying up until three in the morning. Sometimes, that is when we feel most alive. Creating those moments when you are young, making mistakes, living loud and fully, is self-care. Obviously, making this a habit and repeating this pattern every night is not necessarily healthy for you- mentally or physically. Though, on occasion, those nights are when you make memories, learn valuable lessons, and feel the youngest you’ve ever felt.

We as humans need social interaction and fun to thrive. Living inside of a bubble to protect yourself is not going to lead to a happy life (which is something I struggle to acknowledge). I love working out and everything showers as much as the next person, but if that is your whole life, when are you going to experience the real world outside of your bubble?

Balance is key to making the best of both worlds: living a full life and living a healthy one.

Taking advantage of your youth is part of life. I forget just how young I am and feel stuck in routines and habits I hate, but then I think to myself:

“Now is the time to make the changes and go after something I want, because I can.”

That is the whole reason I started this blog, because I CAN do it. I have the power to create things and try to reach for seemingly unrealistic goals in life. Laughing on the couch eating 1,000 calories in Cook-Out can be self-care. Sometimes, that is something I truly need during a difficult time. Sometimes, those nights are cherished more than calorie counting days and completing my skincare routine.
